Peace and Blessing Upon Our Congregation
Church Anniversary Celebration Sunday, July 17th at 10:00 a.m. Worship
Praise God from whom all blessings flow! We thank God for blessing our congregation for 131 years. Jesus said, “Upon this rock, I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” (Matthew 16:18) Look where God has brought us from. Our congregation began from humble beginnings in 1885 with the prayers of 12 parishioners in the home of the late Mr. and Mrs. Junius Wilkerson. The congregation moved meetings from the Wilkerson home to hold initial services in 1886 at the Lafayette Hall on Railroad Avenue (now Main Street). The church was officially incorporated on April 23, 1890. In that same year, the property at 1 Fisher Avenue was purchased for $1 and a frame church was erected and dedicated on May 17, 1891 at a cost of $1,325. The membership at that time was 31.
Over the years, a larger building was erected with extensions and expan-sions added to facilitate congregational growth and ministry program needs on that same site. We are blessed to worship and serve the community on the same parcel of land purchased in 1890. The membership size and activities of the church have increased over the years. In recent years we have shifted from an in-ward focus on programs for the congregation to an outward focus on ministry and missions to the community and the world. We truly want to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world as described by Jesus in Matthew 5:13-16. The current membership is approximately 500 and there are over 25 active ministries and pro-grams, as well as the Passage to Excellence Not-for-profit Corporation designed to meet the needs and interests of people of all ages both within and outside of the church walls.
